உலகமெங்கிலும் இருக்கும் மருத்துவ மாணவர்கள், தங்கள் கல்வியைத் தொடங்குவதற்கு முன்னர், உயிர்காக்கும் சேவையாக இதைக் கருதி சேவையாற்றுவேன் என்ற உறுதிமொழியை எடுப்பது வழக்கம். இந்தியா மட்டுமல்ல பெரும்பாலான மேற்கத்திய நாடுகளில் மருத்துவ மாணவர்கள் ‘The Hippocratic Oath’ என்கிற உறுதிமொழியை எடுப்பதை வழக்கமாகக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள். ஹிப்போகிரட்டீஸ் என்பவர் சுமார் 2,000 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னர் வாழ்ந்த கிரேக்க மருத்துவராவார். தொடக்க காலங்களில் காயங்களை குணமாக்கும் கிரேக்கக் கடவுளான அப்போலோ உள்ளிட்ட தெய்வங்கள் சாட்சியாக உறுதிமொழி எடுக்கப்பட்டு வந்தது. பின்னர், மருத்துவத் துறையின் தந்தை என்று போற்றப்படும் ஹிப்போகிரட்டீஸ் பெயரால் எடுக்கப்படும் உறுதிமொழியை 1948 வாக்கில் உலக மருத்துவ கவுன்சில் ஏற்றுக்கொண்டது. இந்தியாவில் பல ஆண்டுகளாக ஹிப்போகிரட்டீஸ் உறுதிமொழி எடுப்பது நடைமுறையில் உள்ள வழக்கம்.

மஹரிஷி ஷரக் ஷபத் என்பவர் சுமார் 2,300 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னர் வாழ்ந்த வேத மருத்துவராக அறியப்படுகிறார். ஆயுர்வேத முறைப்படி மருத்துவ சேவையாற்றிய ஷரக் ஷபத், மருத்துவர்கள் எப்படி இருக்க வேண்டும், அவர்கள் மருத்துவ சேவையை எப்படி செய்ய வேண்டும் உள்ளிட்ட பல்வேறு வரையறைகளை சம்ஸ்கிருத மொழியில் எழுதியிருக்கிறார். அவற்றில், மருத்துவர்கள் என்பவர்கள் கண்டிப்பாக தாடியும் மீசையும் வைத்திருக்க வேண்டும் உள்ளிட்ட சில ஷரத்துகள் நீக்கப்பட்டு, நவீனப்படுத்தப்பட்ட வடிவம் தற்போது சில இடங்களில் பயன்பாட்டில் இருக்கிறது. மத்திய அரசின் எய்ம்ஸ் மருத்துவக் கல்லூரிகளின் வருடாந்திர பட்டமளிப்பு விழாவின் ஒரு பகுதியாக ஷரக் ஷபத் உறுதிமொழி எடுப்பது வழக்கமாக இருக்கிறது என்று அதன் தலைவராகக் கடந்த 2013-ல் பொறுப்பேற்றிருந்த எஸ்.சி.மிஸ்ரா குறிப்பிட்டிருந்தார்.

எங்கே தொடங்கியது சர்ச்சை?

ஹிப்போகிரட்டீஸ் உறுதிமொழிக்குப் பதிலாக ஷரக் ஷபத் உறுதிமொழியைப் பரிந்துரைத்து தேசிய மருத்துவ ஆணையம் (NMC) கடந்த பிப்ரவரி 7-ம் தேதி அனுப்பிய சுற்றறிக்கையில்தான் சர்ச்சை தொடங்கியது. இந்த சுற்றறிக்கைக்கு ஒரு சில மருத்துவர்கள் ஆதரவு தெரிவித்த நிலையில், இந்திய மருத்துவர்கள் சம்மேளனம் (IMA) உள்ளிட்ட அமைப்புகள் எதிர்ப்புத் தெரிவித்தன. இதுகுறித்து நாடாளுமன்றத்தில் எழுப்பப்பட்ட கேள்விக்குப் பதிலளித்த மத்திய சுகாதாரத் துறை இணையமைச்சர் பாரதி பிரவீன் பவார், ஹிப்போகிரட்டீஸ் உறுதிமொழியை, ஷரக் ஷபத் உறுதிமொழி மூலம் மாற்றும் திட்டம் எதுவும் அரசுக்கு இல்லை என்று தெரிவித்திருந்தார்.
