சென்னையின் பார்க் டவுன் ரயில் நிலையத்துக்கு அந்தப் பெயர் ஏன் வந்தது? சென்னைக்கு நடுவே 116 ஏக்கர் பூங்கா காணாமல் போன கதை.!
1859-ம் ஆண்டு, அப்போதைய மெட்ராஸ் கவர்னரா இருந்த சர். சார்லஸ் ட்ரெவெலியன் ஒரு திட்டம் கொண்டுவர நினைக்கிறார். மெட்ராஸுக்கு நடுவில் ஒரு பெரிய பூங்கா கட்டினால் மிடில் க்ளாஸ் மக்கள் ஆரோக்யமாகவும் மகிழ்ச்சியாகவும் இருக்கலாம் என்று நினைக்கிறார். அரசாங்கத்திடம் போராடி அனுமதியும் வாங்குகிறார். 1986-ல் 116 ஏக்கரில் கட்டப்பட்ட People’s Park என்கிற மக்கள் பூங்கா செயல்பாட்டுக்கு வருகிறது.
எக்கச்சக்க மரங்கள், அஞ்சரை மைலுக்கு நடைபாதை, உயிரியல் பூங்கா , 12 ஏரிகள், படகு சவாரி என மெட்ராஸின் நுரையீரல் என்று சொல்லும் அளவுக்கு பசுமையான பூங்காவாக இருந்தது.
அப்போது சென்னை அருங்காட்சியகத்தில் பத்தாண்டுகளாக இயங்கி வந்த உயிரியல் பூங்கா இந்த மக்கள் பூங்காவுக்கு மாற்றப்பட்டது. இதனால் மெட்ராஸ் மக்கள் அருங்காட்சியகத்துக்கு ‘செத்த காலேஜ்’ என்றும், புதிய உயிரியல் பூங்காவுக்கு ‘உயிர் காலேஜ்’ என்று செல்லப் பெயர் வைத்தார்கள். ஆப்பிரிக்க சிங்கம் முதல் அசாம் காண்டாமிருகம் வரை ஆயிரக்கணக்கான உயிரினங்கள் காட்சிக்கு வைக்கப்பட்டிருந்தது. இந்த உயிரியல் பூங்கா அப்போது எப்படி இருந்தது என்று பார்க்க விரும்பினால் காக்கும் கரங்கள் படத்தில் வந்த அல்லித்தண்டு கால் எடுத்து பாடலை யூ-டியூபில் பார்க்கலாம். 100 ஆண்டுகளுக்கும் மேலாக இருந்த இந்த உயிரியல் பூங்கா இடநெருக்கடி காரணமாக 1985 ஆம் ஆண்டு வண்டலூருக்கு இடம் மாற்றம் செய்யப்பட்டது.
இந்த பூங்கா கட்டப்பட்டு 20 வருடங்கள் கழித்து விக்டோரிய மகாராணியின் 50 ஆண்டு பொன்விழா வந்தது. இதன் நினைவாக இந்தப் பூங்காவிற்கு நடுவில் விக்டோரியா ஹால் ஒன்று கட்டப்பட்டது. இங்கு நடன நிகழ்ச்சிகள், மலர்க் கண்காட்சி, கிறிஸ்துமஸ் & புத்தாண்டு விழாக்கள் கொண்டாடப்பட்டது. 1950 வரை இந்த மலர்க்கண்காட்சிகள் தொடர்ந்து நடந்திருக்கிறது.
மக்கள் நடமாட்டம் அதிகமாகவே குட்டி குட்டி கடைகளும் முளைத்தன. இந்த இடத்தை நியூ டவுன் என்றும் பார்க் டவுன் என்றும் மக்கள் அழைக்கத் தொடங்கினர். அப்போது மெட்ராஸில் இருந்த ஜார்ஜ் டவுன் பிரிட்டிஷ்காரர்கள் அதிகம் வாழும் குடியிருப்பாகவும். பார்க் டவுன் ஆங்கிலோ இந்தியர்கள் அதிகம் வாழும் குடியிருப்பாகவும் இருந்தது. இந்த பார்க் டவுனில் 1873 வது ஆண்டில் சென்னையின் இரண்டாவது ரயில் நிலையம் கட்டப்பட்டது. அதுதான் இப்போதைய சென்ட்ரல் ரயில்வே ஸ்டேஷன்.
இப்படி மக்கள் பூங்காவில் ஒவ்வொரு கட்டிடமாக உள்நுழைய 1900 ஆம் ஆண்டு ஒரு பெரிய வணிக வளாகம் பூங்காவிற்குள் உள்ளே வந்தது. அது மூர் மார்க்கெட்.
1790-ல சென்னையோட மக்கள் தொகை 3 லட்சம். அப்போது பெரிய டவுனாக இருந்தது பிராட்வே பகுதி. பாப்ஹேம் அப்படிங்குற ஒரு வழக்கறிஞர் அங்க இருக்குற மக்கள் தொழில் பண்ணனும்னு அவருக்கு சொந்தமான இடத்தில் ஒரு சந்தையைக் கட்டித்தந்தார். அந்த சந்தைக்குப் பெயர் பாப்ஹேம் சந்தை. இடநெருக்கடியாலும் ரயில் நிலையத்திற்கு அருகே சந்தை இருந்தால் நன்றாக இருக்கும் என்பதாலும் இந்தச் சந்தை பீப்பிள்ஸ் பார்க்கிற்கு மாற்றப்பட்டது. சர் ஜார்ஜ் மூர் என்கிற லெப்டினன்ட் ஜெனரல் கட்டியதால் இதற்கு பெயர் மூர் மார்க்கெட். 40 ஆயிரம் சதுர அடி பரப்பளவில் பிரமாண்டமாக இருந்த இந்த மூர் மார்க்கெட் இப்போதைய ஷாப்பிங் மால்களுக்கெல்லாம் தாத்தா. 80 வருடங்களுக்கெல்லாம் மேலாக பரபரப்பாக இயங்கிவந்த இந்த மார்க்கெட் ஒரு துர்சம்பவத்தைச் சந்தித்தது. 1985 ஆம் ஆண்டு ஓர் இரவில் மூர் மார்க்கெட் தீப்பிடித்து எரிந்தது. இதற்கு பின்னால் ஒரு சர்ச்சையும் உண்டு. பின்னர் இந்தக் கட்டிடம் புதுப்பிக்கப்பட்டு ரயில்வே அலுவலகமாகவும் இப்போதைய புறநகர் ரயில் நிலையமாகவும் செயல்படுகிறது. இங்கிருந்த மூர் மார்க்கெட் பக்கத்திலிருந்த அல்லிகுளத்தை ஆக்கிரமித்துக் கட்டப்பட்ட புதிய வளாகத்துக்கு மாற்றப்பட்டது.
இப்படி கொஞ்சம் கொஞ்சமாக அழிந்து மிச்சமீதியிருந்த கொஞ்ச நிலமும் 1993 ஆம் ஆண்டு நேரு ஸ்டேடியமாக மாறிப்போனது.
116 ஏக்கரில் சென்னையின் நுரையீரலாக இருந்து சென்னைவாசிகளை ஆசுவாசப்படுத்திய மக்கள் பூங்கா இன்று மூச்சு முட்டும் கான்கிரீட் கட்டிடங்களுக்கு நடுவில் காணமல் போனது. வெறும் பெயரில் மட்டும் ‘பார்க்’ இருக்கும் ‘பார்க் டவுன்’ ரயில் நிலையம் 150 ஆண்டுகால வரலாற்றின் கடைசி சாட்சி.
