திருநெல்வேலி மாவட்டம் சீவலப்பேரி கிராமத் தலைவர் சுப்பிரமணிய பிள்ளை கொலைவழக்கில் முக்கிய குற்றவாளிகளான சீவலப்பேரி பாண்டி, முருகன், முண்டத் தேவர் ஆகிய மூவரும் நண்பர்கள். கிராமத் தலைவரிடம் மெய்க்காப்பாளராகப் பணிபுரிந்த சீவலப்பேரி பாண்டி, கொலை வழக்கில் முதல் குற்றவாளி. கொலை வழக்கில் சிறையில் இருந்தபோது, தனது குடும்பத்தினருக்கு நண்பர்கள் உதவவில்லை என்ற ஆத்திரத்தில் சிறையில் இருந்து தப்பிய பாண்டி, அவர்களைப் பழிவாங்கியிருக்கிறார். இருப்பவர்களிடம் கொள்ளையடித்து இல்லாதவர்களிடம் கொடுத்துவந்த இவர் அப்பகுதியின் ராபின்ஹுட்டாகவே கொண்டாடப்பட்டிருக்கிறார்.

சிறையிலிருந்து தப்பிய பாண்டி மீது கொலை, கொள்ளை, வழிப்பறி வழக்குகள் வரிசைகட்ட ஒருகட்டத்தில் அவரை என்கவுண்டர் செய்ய போலீஸ் முடிவெடுக்கிறது. போலீஸின் தொடர்ச்சியான தேடுதல் வேட்டையில் 1981-ம் ஆண்டு ஏப்ரல் மாதத்தில் சீவலப்பேரி பாண்டி என்கவுண்டர் செய்யப்பட்டார். போலீஸாரிடம் சரணடைய முடிவெடுத்த பாண்டி என்கவுண்டரில் சுட்டுக்கொல்லப்பட்டார். அவர் கைது செய்யப்பட்டால், மக்கள் ஆதரவு அதிகம் இருக்கும் அவருக்கு தண்டனை பெற்றுத் தருவது கடினம் என்று போலீஸார் கருதியதே காரணம் என்று சொல்லப்படுகிறது. இன்றும் அப்பகுதி மக்கள் தங்கள் குழந்தைகளுக்கு பாண்டியின் பெயரையும், அவரது மனைவி வேலம்மாள் பெயரையும் சூட்டி மகிழ்கிறார்கள்.

முன்சீப் கொலை வழக்கில் தூக்கு தண்டனை விதிக்கப்பட்டு, மறுநாள் தண்டனை நிறைவேற்றப்படும் நிலையிலும் நிதானமாக உறங்கியவர் பாண்டி. ஆனால், எதிர்பாரா திருப்பமாக, காந்தியின் கொள்கைகளுக்கு ஏற்ப அவரின் தூக்கு, ஆயுள் தண்டனையாகக் குறைக்கப்பட்டது. தூக்கு தண்டனை நிறைவேற்றப்படுவதற்கு முதல் நாள் இரவில் அவரின் தண்டனை நிறுத்தி வைக்கப்பட்டது. திருச்சி கண்டோன்மெண்ட் ஜெயிலில் இருந்து தப்பிய அவர், ரயிலில் சந்தித்த ஒரு பெரிய மனிதர் மூலம் கொடைக்கானலை அடுத்த பூம்பாறை அருகே உள்ள கிராமத்தில் சில காலம் ஒளிந்திருக்கிறார். முதலில் அந்த பெரிய மனிதரின் தோட்டங்களைக் காவல் காக்கும் பணியில் ஈடுபட்டவர், பின்னாட்களில் மனைவியோடு அங்கு குடியேறி விவசாயமும், குதிரை மூலம் பொருட்களை ஓரிடத்தில் இருந்து மற்றொரு இடங்களுக்குக் கொண்டு சேர்க்கும் பணியிலும் ஈடுபட்டிருக்கிறார். மனைவியோடு வசித்து வந்தாலும், அவ்வப்போது திருநெல்வேலி சென்று கொள்ளை சம்பவங்களிலும் ஈடுபட்டிருக்கிறார். இருப்பவர்களிடம் இருந்து பறித்து, அதை இல்லாதவர்களிடம் கொடுத்து வந்ததால், திருநெல்வேலி ஜில்லாவில் சீவலப்பேரி பாண்டிக்கு ஆதரவு பெருகியது. போலீஸ் இவரை கொடுங்குற்றவாளியாக அறிவித்து தேடி வந்தது.
